Adding Some Extra Cargo Area To Your Vehicle

Finding the room can often be challenging when you need more space to carry cargo with your car, but adding a cargo carrier to the vehicle can help. The cargo carrier does not use the space inside the car. Still, it opens up additional cargo areas, utilizing the outside and allowing you to carry things you otherwise would not be able to.

Rooftop Cargo Carriers

The roof of your vehicle is commonly unused, so adding a cargo carrier is an excellent way to open up space for large items or for things you otherwise would have to leave at home. There are several different style carriers that you may want to consider, including ski boxes and oversize cargo boxes that can be attached to the roof and then secured with a lock after you have added the cargo to them.

Some cargo carriers attach to an existing roof rack or support system, while others can be secured directly to the car. Check the mounting system for any cargo carrier you are considering before you purchase it to ensure it will mount on your vehicle without causing any damage.

Many dealers who sell cargo carriers can install them for you, so if you are unsure about what you need, ask the dealer to help you choose the right one for your make and model. Once you select the carrier that will fit your needs, the dealer can install it, so it is ready to use when you are ready. Many of the rooftop models are detachable, so once you are done with it, you can take it off and store it until you need the carrier again.

Hitch-Mounted Systems

Another type of carrier popular with truck and SUV owners is a hitch-mounted box that uses the receiver hitch on your vehicle as a mounting point for the carrier. Cargo carriers designed to mount in the hitch are readily available from any dealer, and often they can be found online as well.

The system is easy to use, and the support frame slides into the receiver hitch on your vehicle, so taking it off, storing it, then reinstalling it is nearly effortless. Hitch-mounted cargo carriers come in many different sizes so that they can be used on other vehicles.

The largest carriers are typically used on trucks and full-size SUVs, and smaller models are often better for cars or small SUVs with limited load capacity on the hitch. Like the rooftop models, if you are unsure which box to purchase for your truck, SUV, or car, check with the local dealer, and they can recommend a model based on the hitch and the vehicle you are putting the carrier on.
